Z
eena Rahman grew up listening to her parents, Shams and Zeenat Hazarika, sing
Tagore songs. The first song her mother taught her was Tumi Kemon Kore Gaan
Koro Hey Guni and from her father she learned his favorite, Anondo Dhara
Bohiche Bhubone. This theme has continued through her thirty year marriage to
Ehsan Rahman who is arguably the greatest admirer of Tagore. She was fortunate
to have the late Atiqul Islam of the Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts as a teacher.
Ms. Rahman has been a disciple of Srimati Banani Ghosh for more than a decade.
This album of love songs would not have been possible without her unflagging
support. In 1998, her guru chose her to perform at Kola Mondir in Kolkata as a
guest artist in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Dakshinee. In 1999, Srimati
Ghosh included two songs sung by Ms. Rahman in a cd entitled "Antara" produced
by Rhyme Records.
Zeena Rahman's professional career is in
international trade finance. She is with the Federal Civil Service of the
United States and is currently serving at the Export Import Bank of the United
States in Washington, D.C. managing business development in China and Southeast
Asia. She graduated with a M.Sc from the Edmund E. Walsh School of Foreign
Service at Georgetown University. She also received an M.A in Anthropology from
the University of Manitoba, and a B.A (Hon) in Economics from Dhaka University.
Ms. Rahman lives in McLean, Virginia with her husband and daughter.
