Surangama

Surangama - A school for Tagore music and culture was founded on August 16, 1957 by the Late Rabindra Sangeetacharya Sailaja Ranjan Majumder, one of the most distinguished disciples of the Nobel Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore with endorsing efforts from such luminaries as Pravas Niyogi, Nilima Sen, Debojyoti Dutta Majumdar and Prosad Sen. The inauguration ceremony for Surangama took place at the Netaji Bhavan in Calcutta with initiative from the "Sarat Bose Academy".

Sailaja Ranjan Mazumder, born on 20th July 1900 in Baham (district Maimansingha), now in Bangladesh, studied Chemistry at the University of Calcutta under such notable luminaries as Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and Satyendra Nath Bose. At the request of his father, Sailaja Ranjan, studied Law and began his career as a lawyer.

Soon Sailaja Ranjan was presented with the opportunity to join Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan as a professor of Chemistry. He joined this prestigious university with an aim of learning Rabindrasangeet under the guidance of Dinendranath and Rabindranath Tagore - much to the contrary of his father' s desires.

Sailaja Ranjan soon excelled in notation writing for much of Rabindranath's songs and in no time, became an authority in completing many of Tagore's musical compositions. In 1939, Rabindranath, himself, appointed Sailaja Ranjan Mazumder as the Principal of Sangeet Bhavan at Visva-Bharati University. Sailaja Ranjan held this position until 1960. As an eminent notation writers of Rabindrasangeet, Dr Sailaja Ranjan Majumder prepared and edited much of the musical works of Tagore including such notable compositions as "Chitrangada", "Chandalika" and "Shyama" to name a few.

Surangama, an established organization is a regular performer at the prestigious All India Radio and Doordarshan of Calcutta. In addition to Rabindrasangeet, Surangama also performs other musical genres such as Brahma sangeet and Abhinaba sangeet (as composed by Prafulla Kumar Das).

Surangama is involved with research activities on Rabindrasangeet and has published numerous books, magazines & articles on this topic. The publication entitled Rabindra Sangeet Gobeshana Granthamala is an invaluable asset to the connoisseurs of Rabindrasangeet. Additionally, Surangama has undertaken an effort to preserve the musical genius of the Nobel Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore, with an archival effort known as the "Music Preservation Scheme".
