Surangama
- Aschool for Tagore music and culture was founded on August 16, 1957
by the Late Rabindra Sangeetacharya Sailaja Ranjan Majumder, one of the most
distinguished disciples of the Nobel Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore with
endorsing efforts from such luminaries as Pravas Niyogi, Nilima Sen, Debojyoti
Dutta Majumdar and Prosad Sen. The inauguration ceremony for Surangama took
place at the Netaji Bhavan in Calcutta with initiative from the "Sarat Bose
Academy".
Sailaja
Ranjan Mazumder, born on 20th July 1900 in Baham (district Maimansingha), now
in Bangladesh, studied Chemistry at the University of Calcutta under such
notable luminaries as Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and Satyendra Nath Bose. At
the request of his father, Sailaja Ranjan, studied Law and began his career as
a lawyer.
Soon
Sailaja Ranjan was presented with the opportunity to join Visva-Bharati
University in Santiniketan as a professor of Chemistry. He joined this
prestigious university with an aim of learning Rabindrasangeet under the
guidance of Dinendranath and Rabindranath Tagore - much to the contrary of his
father' s desires.
Sailaja
Ranjan soon excelled in notation writing for much of Rabindranath's songs and
in no time, became an authority in completing many of Tagore's musical
compositions. In 1939, Rabindranath, himself, appointed Sailaja Ranjan Mazumder
as the Principal of Sangeet Bhavan at Visva-Bharati University. Sailaja Ranjan
held this position until 1960. As an eminent notation writers of
Rabindrasangeet, Dr Sailaja Ranjan Majumder prepared and edited much of the
musical works of Tagore including such notable compositions as "Chitrangada",
"Chandalika" and "Shyama" to name a few.
Surangama,
an established organization is a regular performer at the prestigious All India
Radio and Doordarshan of Calcutta. In addition to Rabindrasangeet, Surangama
also performs other musical genres such as Brahma sangeet and Abhinaba sangeet
(as composed by Prafulla Kumar Das).
Surangama is involved with research
activities on Rabindrasangeet and has published numerous books, magazines &
articles on this topic. The publication entitled
Rabindra
Sangeet Gobeshana Granthamala
is an invaluable asset to the connoisseurs of Rabindrasangeet. Additionally,
Surangama has undertaken an effort to preserve the musical genius of the Nobel
Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore, with an archival effort known as the "Music
Preservation Scheme".
