Sumitra
Sen, one of the noted exponents of the Bengali music genre has also been
instrumental in popularizing the melodies of the Nobel Laureate poet,
Rabindranath Tagore. For over four decades, she has won the hearts of the music
lovers the world over.
Initiated into music at
an early age by her mother, Sumitra joined
Geetabitan, an established institution for Rabindra sangeet
(Tagore's music) in Calcutta. Her quest for musical perfection led her to seek
additional talim
(personalized learning) from two distinguished exponents of Rabindra sangeet -
the Late Sri. Soumendranath Thakur and the Late Sri. Anadi Kumar Dastidar.
Sumitra has been a performing artist of
the prestigious All India Radio for the last forty years and one of the
privileged few to be associated with the Calcutta Doordarshan since its'
inception. She has been associated with the Rabindra Bharati University as a
Professor and Head of the Rabindra Sangeet department.
In addition to her career as an
established Rabindra sangeet artist, Sumitra Sen has been a celebrated figure
in the Bengali film industry as a noted playback singer. Her popularity even
touched foreign shores as she received countless invitations to perform in such
countries as Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, The United States of America and
The United Kingdom where she earned rave reviews for her repeat performances.
As an eminent artist in the
field of Bengali music, Sumitra has to her credit, innumerable recordings from
prestigious labels such as The Gramophone company of India (HMV), Gathani, EBI
and Soundwing, to name a few.
For Sumitra Sen,
Rabindra sangeet is still an active part of her life. She is one of the elected
members of the Experts Committee at the Visva-Bharati music board that approves
the works of Rabindranath Tagore prior to commercial release. Additionally, she
has now undertaken the task to develop young talents through her own
institution Tribeni,
which bears her musical style and signature.
