Although
primarily a singer, Srikanto's first love has always been the Tabla in which he
received formal training under the guidance of the Late Ustad Ali Ahmad Khan.
Unfortunately, his training was prematurely discontinued due to the failing
health of his teacher.
As a vocalist,
Srikanto received formal training in Rabindra Sangeet from Dakshinee - an
established music institution in Calcutta. Srikanto's versatility as a
performer stems from the fact that he has been an avid listener of various
kinds of music. And in this respect, Srikanto Acharya is essentially, a
self-taught musician.
Srikanto's first
solo album "Hey Bondhu, Hey Priyo" - a compilation of Tagore songs was released
in 1996 along with the release of "Moner Janala" - a compilation of Bengali
modern songs of yesteryears. The immense popularity of "Moner Janala" resulted
in a Gold Disc award followed by a Platinum Disc award as well. Similar
phenomenon occurred with the record sales of "Neel Dhrubotara" released in
1997.
Srikanto's duet
album with the popular, Sadhana Sargam resulted in a Gold Disc award as well.
"Ma Amar" - a compilation of devotional compositions of Kazi Nazrul Islam
released in 1999 has also gained immense popularity and revealed yet another
facet of Srikanto's versatility.
Srikanto's Puja 2000
release entitled "Brishti Tomakay Dilam" received much fanfare and was awarded
with the Snowcem-Anandabazar Album of the Year award, along with the National
Kalakar award sponsored by Cine Advance and ATN World.
Srikanto is a
regular performer on the Bengali TV serials as well as films and has worked
with such established luminaries as Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Sukumar Mitra,
Abhijit Bandopadhyay, Jatileshwar Mukhopadhyay, Ajoy Das, Suman Chattopadhyay,
Kalyan Sen Barat and Debojyoti Mishra to name a few.
Srikanto has
performed in such prestigious events as the Geetabitan Project and the Puja
Project for All India Radio. The song that he had recorded for All India
Radio's celebration of the fifty years of Indian Independence was selected as
Song of the Month in 1997. Srikanto has performed live for AIR's celebration
release of a CD featuring the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore performing his
compositions in his own voice. This festivity was presided by the Honorable
Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Srikanto has also
been the recipient of the Outstanding Young Person's Award for his achievements
in music awarded by the North Calcutta Junior Chamber.
Srikanto participates in all
major festivities nationally as well as internationally. For the North American
Bengali Conference held in New Jersey in 2000, Srikanto was amongst the noted
performing artist invited to perform at this prestigious annual event.
