Rhyme Records: Indian Classical and Bengali Music

Srikanto Acharya

Although primarily a singer, Srikanto's first love has always been the Tabla in which he received formal training under the guidance of the Late Ustad Ali Ahmad Khan. Unfortunately, his training was prematurely discontinued due to the failing health of his teacher.

As a vocalist, Srikanto received formal training in Rabindra Sangeet from Dakshinee - an established music institution in Calcutta. Srikanto's versatility as a performer stems from the fact that he has been an avid listener of various kinds of music. And in this respect, Srikanto Acharya is essentially, a self-taught musician.

Srikanto's first solo album "Hey Bondhu, Hey Priyo" - a compilation of Tagore songs was released in 1996 along with the release of "Moner Janala" - a compilation of Bengali modern songs of yesteryears. The immense popularity of "Moner Janala" resulted in a Gold Disc award followed by a Platinum Disc award as well. Similar phenomenon occurred with the record sales of "Neel Dhrubotara" released in 1997.

Srikanto's duet album with the popular, Sadhana Sargam resulted in a Gold Disc award as well. "Ma Amar" - a compilation of devotional compositions of Kazi Nazrul Islam released in 1999 has also gained immense popularity and revealed yet another facet of Srikanto's versatility.

Srikanto's Puja 2000 release entitled "Brishti Tomakay Dilam" received much fanfare and was awarded with the Snowcem-Anandabazar Album of the Year award, along with the National Kalakar award sponsored by Cine Advance and ATN World.

Srikanto is a regular performer on the Bengali TV serials as well as films and has worked with such established luminaries as Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Sukumar Mitra, Abhijit Bandopadhyay, Jatileshwar Mukhopadhyay, Ajoy Das, Suman Chattopadhyay, Kalyan Sen Barat and Debojyoti Mishra to name a few.

Srikanto has performed in such prestigious events as the Geetabitan Project and the Puja Project for All India Radio. The song that he had recorded for All India Radio's celebration of the fifty years of Indian Independence was selected as Song of the Month in 1997. Srikanto has performed live for AIR's celebration release of a CD featuring the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore performing his compositions in his own voice. This festivity was presided by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Srikanto has also been the recipient of the Outstanding Young Person's Award for his achievements in music awarded by the North Calcutta Junior Chamber.

     S
rikanto participates in all major festivities nationally as well as internationally. For the North American Bengali Conference held in New Jersey in 2000, Srikanto was amongst the noted performing artist invited to perform at this prestigious annual event.
