Pandit Ronu Majumdar, flautist par
excellence, needs no special introduction to the music connoisseurs around the
world. By virtue of his unique talent, Ronu and the Bansuri (Bamboo flute) are
considered today as synonymous. A powerhouse performer, Ronu Majumdar has been
firmly rooted in the established tradition of the esteemed Maihar gharana,
which has produced such luminaries as Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali
Akbar Khan to name a few.
Ronu Majumdar was born in
Varanasi. At an early age, Ronu began his lessons on the flute under the
guidance of his father Dr. Bhanu Majumdar followed by the Late Pandit Laxman
Prasad Jaipurwale. Ronu's tutelage continued under the revered Pandit Vijay
Raghav Rao.
Apart from his yearly
performances all around the world, Ronu has concentrated and has become a major
innovator on the forum of New-Age music as well as on movie soundtracks. His
most notable music contribution was on the Hollywood film, "Primary Colors".
Ronu has created an enviable niche for himself in the field of contemporary
music which is exemplified by his GRAMMY Nomination in 1996. Ronu Majumdar is a
name that has been associated musically along side such legendary luminaries as
Pandit Ravi Shankar, the Late George Harrison and Ry Cooder.

perform on the Bansuri, one cannot help but wonder about the inordinate range
of expression that flows through this hollow bamboo which musically captures
