Rhyme Records: Indian Classical and Bengali Music

Ronu Majumdar

Pandit Ronu Majumdar, flautist par excellence, needs no special introduction to the music connoisseurs around the world. By virtue of his unique talent, Ronu and the Bansuri (Bamboo flute) are considered today as synonymous. A powerhouse performer, Ronu Majumdar has been firmly rooted in the established tradition of the esteemed Maihar gharana, which has produced such luminaries as Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan to name a few.

Ronu Majumdar was born in Varanasi. At an early age, Ronu began his lessons on the flute under the guidance of his father Dr. Bhanu Majumdar followed by the Late Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale. Ronu's tutelage continued under the revered Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao.

Apart from his yearly performances all around the world, Ronu has concentrated and has become a major innovator on the forum of New-Age music as well as on movie soundtracks. His most notable music contribution was on the Hollywood film, "Primary Colors". Ronu has created an enviable niche for himself in the field of contemporary music which is exemplified by his GRAMMY Nomination in 1996. Ronu Majumdar is a name that has been associated musically along side such legendary luminaries as Pandit Ravi Shankar, the Late George Harrison and Ry Cooder.

When one hears Ronu Majumdar perform on the Bansuri, one cannot help but wonder about the inordinate range of expression that flows through this hollow bamboo which musically captures and mesmerize people across all cultures and continents. Here are a thousand hopes for his continued success.
